Opis: Bob Arctor handluje śmiertelnie niebezpiecznym narkotykiem, Substancją A (w wer.ang. "substance D"). Zadaniem Freda, agenta policji, jest doprowadzenie do aresztowania Arctora. Żeby wtopić się w społeczność narkomanów, Fred przyjmuje coraz większe dawki Substancji A. Ponieważ rozszczepia ona mózg na dwie odrębne, rywalizujące ze sobą części, Fred nie zdaje sobie sprawy, że śledzi samego siebie.
Policjanci i przestępcy zawsze byli od siebie uzależnieni. Film oparty jest na powieści Philipa K. Dicka pt. "Przez ciemne zwierciadło" i chyba w żadnej innej powieści nie przedstawiono tego perwersyjnego związku dogłębniej niż tu.
